You Don't Have to Carry Tomorrow: A Rooted Moment for the Anxious Heart
🎧 Listen to this Rooted Moment → 128 | You Don't Have to Carry Tomorrow (about 5 minutes)
The days are getting shorter. The dark comes a little sooner now. And this week I caught myself bracing for what's ahead — and then I remembered I don't actually have to.
The word for the worried heart
Jesus, speaking straight to the anxious one:
"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."
— Matthew 6:34
Notice what He isn't saying. He isn't saying tomorrow is nothing. He's saying tomorrow is not yours to carry today.
What the garden keeps teaching me
Last week I wrote about the Proverbs 31 woman, and one line about her has not let go of me: she laughs at the days to come. She looks straight at the coming winter — the cold, the unknown, the leaner months — and she isn't afraid. How do you laugh at the days to come when the days to come are exactly what keep you up at night?
I think the garden has been quietly teaching me. I cannot plant all of next year today. I can't force the fall garden and the spring garden and next summer's harvest into one tired October afternoon. The soil won't allow it, and honestly, neither will my body. All I can do is tend today's square of dirt — clear this one bed, plant these few seeds, water what's in front of me — and trust the rest of the year to unfold one day at a time, the way God designed it.
A garden cannot be rushed into the future. It can only be tended in the present.
A weight that was never yours
That is exactly what Jesus is offering. He is not scolding you for caring. He's lifting something off you that you were never meant to pick up. We try to live tomorrow today — we drag next week's worries, next month's what-ifs, the whole coming winter into this one day — and then wonder why we're flattened.
But you were never given the grace for tomorrow yet. God gives grace the way He gave manna: fresh, daily, enough for this day. You can't stockpile it, and you don't need to. Tomorrow's grace will be waiting when you arrive.
Why she could laugh
She wasn't trusting her preparation. Her pantry wasn't the point and her plans weren't airtight. She laughed because she knew Who was already standing in her tomorrow. A woman who knows God is already in her future can face it with something that looks, from the outside, almost like laughter.
One faithful response
Today, just this: name the tomorrow you've been dragging into today — and set it down. Tend only what's in front of you this one day. If you want a gentle place to start, try a simple garden plan for October — one month, one bed — or begin a fall garden journal and write the worry down so your hands are free for the work.
A short prayer
Father, thank You that You are already standing in our tomorrow. Forgive us for trying to carry a day You haven't given us yet. Teach us to receive Your grace fresh every morning, enough for just this day. Quiet our anxious hearts, and let us, like her, face the days to come without fear, because You are already there. Amen.
