Still Bearing Fruit: When You Feel Hard Pressed but Not Crushed
🎧 Listen to Episode 112 → Still Bearing Fruit (about 5 minutes)
The most beaten-up pepper plant in my garden is the one still making fruit. I don’t think that’s an accident.
If you were standing out there with me this week, you’d probably feel sorry for my peppers. The leaves are chewed to lace. The heat has been swinging between soaking and scorching, with no mercy in between. By every appearance, these are plants that have taken a beating.
And yet. Down under those ragged leaves, they are still setting fruit — small, golden peppers, the gypsy ones I grew up with. When you taste one, the sweetness is all there. Nothing about what they’ve suffered made it into the flavor.
Here’s what I want you to hear, friend. That fruit isn’t there because the plant had it easy. It’s there because something underneath — something in the roots you can’t see — kept quietly giving, even while the part everyone could see was being torn up. The fruit never comes from the leaves. It comes from the roots. The leaves are just what the world watches getting battered. The roots — the real life — were never up for anyone’s inspection.
That’s the very thing Paul writes about in Second Corinthians, chapter four:
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:8–9
Some of you are living that verse right now. The visible parts of your life look ragged — you’re tired, stretched thin, chewed on by a season that won’t let up. You look around at everyone else’s lush, untroubled-looking lives and wonder if you’re the only one failing.
But the fruit you are still bearing — the meal you made when you had nothing left, the prayer you whispered with shaking hands, the child you refused to give up on, the faith you’re holding by a thread — that fruit is not smaller because you’re damaged. It may be the truest fruit of all. Because it isn’t coming out of ease. It’s coming out of hard pressed, but not crushed. That’s exactly where God loves to show His strength.
He isn’t waiting for you to look put-together before He’ll use you. He never was. The strength was always His to supply — and He supplies it best in the places that look the most worn.
So today, don’t tally up your damage. Go find the small fruit you’re still bearing — and let it be holy. Let it be enough. The lace-leaf plant is still feeding somebody. So are you.
One gentle question: What small fruit are you still bearing that you’d almost forgotten to call holy?
