He Gives His Beloved Sleep: Why Going to Bed With the Work Unfinished Is Faith
🎧 Listen to Episode 116 → He Gives His Beloved Sleep (about 5 minutes)
Last night I turned off the hose in the dark, walked inside with half of it still undone — and I slept anyway.
That, it turns out, is a kind of faith.
There's a particular temptation that comes at the end of a long day. You've done what you could — thirty tired minutes in the garden, or the house, or the work that never quite empties — and now it's dark, and you're inside, and everything undone is still out there. And instead of resting, you lie down and pull all of it into bed with you. You run the list. You rehearse tomorrow. You keep working in your mind long after your hands have stopped, as if worrying over the garden all night might make up for the beds you didn't reach.
I know that particular staying-awake. And this verse has been undoing it in me gently this week.
"It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep." — Psalm 127:2
Look at what it actually says. Rising early, staying up late, eating the bread of anxious toil — that word vain doesn't mean the work is worthless. It means the frantic part is. The part where I try to carry it past my capacity, past the daylight, past the point where I have anything left to give. That striving adds nothing.
And then, right in the middle of that verse, comes the mercy: he gives to his beloved sleep.
Sleep is a gift He hands to the ones He loves. And it's more than rest — it's a nightly sermon. Every single night, God asks you to lie down and become completely useless for eight hours. To stop. To let the world run without your hands on it.
Here's what I keep realizing in my own garden: while I sleep, He is still working. The beans keep climbing in the dark. The roots keep drinking. The growing I could never force happens in the very hours I am doing absolutely nothing. He grows the garden on the night shift. He does not need me awake to keep it alive.
So going to sleep with the work unfinished isn't laziness, and it isn't giving up. It's the most honest prayer your tired body can pray: I am not the one holding this together. You are. Goodnight.
Tonight, when you lie down, don't take the list to bed. Name one undone thing, hand it to Him out loud, and let sleep be the trust you couldn't manage in words.
One gentle question: What is the one undone thing you'll hand Him before you close your eyes tonight?
