Do Not Despise the Day of Small Things: When One Small Thing Is All You Have

🎧 Listen to this Rooted Moment → 124 | Do Not Despise the Day of Small Things (6 minutes)

This week I couldn't face the whole garden.

So I cleaned up a few pots. Just a few. Fifteen minutes, out by the fence, stacking and scrubbing and setting them where the fall light hits. And I've been thinking ever since about how God feels about small beginnings.

Because here is what I did not do: I did not clear the failing beds. I did not deal with the spent okra still standing there like a monument to August. I did not fix the irrigation, or pull the weeds that have been winning since July, or do a single one of the things on the list I keep in my head. I cleaned some pots.

If you had told me a few years ago that this would be the week's gardening, I'd have called it pathetic. A drop in the bucket. Barely worth the fifteen minutes.

The word for the small beginning

Zechariah 4:10 says it plainly:

"For who has despised the day of small things?"

Some translations put it this way: "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin."

Sit with that last part, because I needed it this week and you might too. The Lord rejoices to see the work begin. Not finish. Begin.

Zechariah was speaking to people standing in front of a foundation. Just a foundation — so small compared to the grand temple they remembered that the old men among them wept out loud at the sight of it. It was not impressive. It was not even close to what had been lost.

And God does not scold them for how little they had done. He asks, almost incredulously — who taught you to despise the small beginning? Because I don't.

The plumb line

Here's the detail in that passage I can't get over.

God says the people will rejoice when they see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand. A plumb line. A string with a weight tied to the end of it — the most ordinary tool on any job site, the thing you hold up to check whether what you're building is straight.

That's what heaven celebrated. Not the finished temple. Not the dedication, not the crowds, not the glory. A tired builder holding a piece of string, because it meant somebody had decided to start again.

God looks at the plumb line and He is glad.

Your fifteen minutes

Friend, God is not standing over your life disappointed at how little you managed today.

When you did the one small faithful thing — the one bed, the one pot, the one phone call, the one prayer you barely had the strength to pray — heaven did not sigh. Heaven rejoiced. Not because it was big. Because it was a beginning, and beginnings are where He loves to work.

He is the God who takes a mustard seed. A handful of loaves. A few clean pots. And He grows something out of all proportion to what was put in.

Your small thing is not the opposite of a big work of God. Very often it is the first inch of one.

So stop measuring your small thing against the size of the problem. Measure it against the joy of a God who delights the moment the work begins.

You are not behind. You have begun. And He saw it, and He was glad.

One faithful response

Today, just this: do one small thing — and refuse to despise it. Let it be enough that you began, and that He is glad you did.

If you're not sure where to start in the garden this week, start where I did. Clearing one summer bed for fall planting is a real beginning. So is cleaning and organizing your pots for fall seed starting — which is, quite literally, all I managed. One bed. A few pots. That's a plumb line in your hand.

A short prayer

Father, thank You that You do not despise our small beginnings — that You rejoice the moment the work begins. When we are too tired for the whole thing, meet us in the one small faithful act, and grow it in Your hands far beyond what we could. Teach us to stop measuring our little by the size of the hard, and to trust the God who is glad we started. Amen.
