Aspire to Live Quietly: For the Woman Whose Best Work Is the Work No One Sees
🎧 Listen to this Rooted Moment → 126 | Aspire to Live Quietly (under 7 minutes)
Nobody clapped when I watered the garden this morning.
Nobody ever does. And I've been standing out there thinking that might be one of the most sacred things about it.
A command you weren't expecting
Paul writes something to the Thessalonians that lands, in a world this loud, almost like relief:
"…aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands…"
— 1 Thessalonians 4:11
Read it again and catch what it actually is. That's a command. An aspiration we are told to have.
Not aspire to be seen. Not aspire to build a platform. Aspire to live quietly. To tend your own corner. To work with your hands.
The lie that seeps in
We live in a world that tells us all day long that if a thing isn't seen, it doesn't count. If you didn't post it, did it even happen?
And that lie seeps straight into the soul of a woman at home — because so much of what you do all day is invisible. The laundry folded. The meal made again. The weeds pulled. The child comforted at two in the morning. The small faithful things done and undone and done again.
No applause. No numbers. No one clapping.
But here is the quiet, steadying truth: God sees. Jesus said your Father sees what is done in secret — and He doesn't say it as a warning. He says it as a comfort.
The unseen work is not the lesser work. In God's economy it may be the truest work you do, precisely because no one is watching and you do it anyway, for love, unto Him.
You are allowed a small, quiet life
There is a deep peace waiting in that verse for anyone tired of performing.
You don't have to turn every good thing into something to show. You can grow the tomato and simply eat it. Bake the bread and simply share it. Tend your home and your people and your patch of ground with your own two hands, in the quiet — and know that the God who sees in secret is not the least bit less impressed than He'd be by anything loud.
Think of the garden itself
The most important work a garden does happens where no eye can see — down in the dark, in the roots. Nothing about it is for show. And it is exactly there, in the hidden quiet, that everything which will one day bloom is being decided.
Your quiet, hands-on faithfulness is not you falling behind the noisy world. It's you sending roots down where the real growing happens.
So if you are living an unseen, ordinary, hands-in-the-work life that no algorithm will ever reward — hear this. You are not missing out. You are exactly where the deepest things grow. And your Father sees every bit of it.
One faithful response
Today, just this: do one quiet, faithful thing with your hands — and don't show anyone. Let it be between you and the God who sees in secret, and let that be more than enough.
If you want to practice the quiet on purpose this week, two places to start: what it actually means to rest from tending, and starting a reflective garden journal — a page nobody but you and God will ever read.
A short prayer
Father, thank You that You see in secret — that not one quiet, faithful thing we do is lost on You. In a world that begs us to perform, teach us to aspire to live quietly, to work with our hands, and to trust that the hidden work is where You grow the deepest roots. Free us from needing to be seen, and let it be enough that we are seen by You. Amen.

This week's question: What's the quiet, unseen thing you tend that no one ever claps for?
Leave me one word. I read every single one — and I promise you, it counts.
