There's a bean climbing a stake in my Houston garden that carries a whole heritage in it — and my mother and I chose the very spot for it, together, before she flew home.

Let me tell you about that one little bean.

This summer, before my mom flew back to California, the two of us walked my garden together. We didn't rush it. We looked at where the plants were in their seasons, where there was room, what could climb and what should stay low — and we decided together where the beans should go. Beans like the ones I grew up watching my family tend, a lifetime ago and an ocean away. Then she went home. And I planted them by myself.

So now, when I stand in front of that bean curling up its stake, I'm looking at something that holds my whole life at once. Romania, where I come from. California, where my mother is now. And Houston, where I'm finally growing something again. One small plant, and the map of my life is in it.

Here's what the Lord keeps pressing on my heart as I watch it climb.

"The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance." — Psalm 16:6

Your truest inheritance is not land. It's not a house, or money, or anything you could lose in a move. My family has moved, and moved, and moved. I've left gardens behind. I've started over in soil that had never heard my name. If my inheritance were the ground itself, I'd have lost it a dozen times over.

But the real inheritance travels. It's carried — in a mother's voice saying put it there, not there, and in the hands that taught you how to plant in the first place. It's the faith handed down, the way of tending passed from one generation to the next, the quiet belief that God is worth trusting in every new place you land. That kind of inheritance can't be left behind at a state line. It comes with you.

I used to think Psalm 16 was only about the ground under your feet. I don't anymore. Because the One who sets the boundary lines isn't bound by them. He's the same God in Romania and California and Houston. He keeps the lineage. He keeps you — every place you've been planted, and every place you're being planted still.

That is a goodly heritage. And no move can take it from you.

So today, just this: name one thing that was handed down to you — a prayer, a phrase, a way of trusting God — and plant it on purpose, right where you are.
